You never know at what point your world will be turned upside down.
One April on a Sunday afternoon the unimaginable happened. I live in North Carolina and was up in Newark, Delaware, visiting with a friend. I ended up being in a serious motorcycle accident and was taken to Christiana Care Health System and into surgery.
My parents, also living in North Carolina, got a call from a Christiana Care nurse, quickly packed their bags, and began their long drive north. As my mother shared, “All I could think was what kind of hospital was Alysen in and what kind of doctors were attending to her. My husband and I couldn’t get there fast enough.”
Multiple calls were made by the medical team to my parents during their trip, keeping them informed of my condition during surgery. Even the neurosurgeon who operated on me called to tell them the surgery was over, I was going to be fine, and not to speed to the hospital. For the staff, especially a neurosurgeon, to take the time to call was truly amazing.
Both my parents and I agreed that at no other hospital had we ever experienced the compassion, care, and quality of service that we received from Christiana Care. Throughout my two week stay the medical team fully informed us about my progress, answered our questions, and never seemed rushed.
We are all forever grateful to Christiana Care for saving my life and for the kindness they showed my family and me.
My parents have chosen to make an Annual Fund gift to Christiana Care every year since my accident in 2008. And I’ve chosen to make a bequest in my will for Christiana Care’s Emergency and Trauma Services. I know that few, if any, of my peers have thought about their estate plans at this point in life; but given that Christiana Care essentially saved my life and showed such compassion every step of the way, this is my way of giving back one day. I want to ensure that long into the future others will benefit from the same expert care I received.
You never know what each day will bring, but it’s comforting to know that quality care is available when you need it most.
