Dr. Robert and Jane Frelick

Frelick-lg.jpgDr. Robert (Bob) Frelick and his wife, Jane, have devoted their lives to medical outreach. They met early in their careers at Yale schools of medicine and nursing, married in 1944, and served in Germany with the Army of Occupation. After military discharge they returned to Wilmington, Delaware, Jane’s hometown. Bob began his career in 1947 as medical resident at Memorial Hospital and played an instrumental role in the 1965 merger of three Wilmington hospitals to become Christiana Care.

Dr. Frelick was the first board certified medical oncologist in Delaware and was a founding member of the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC). While working for five years at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland, his pivotal work helped to develop a link between grassroots medical practice in Delaware and federally funded comprehensive cancer research centers. This cooperation helped enormously in facilitating the transmission of new and evolving information in the field of cancer control.

“Dr. Frelick is the consummate professional whose dedication to the cancer patient can only be described as passionate, visionary, and caring. His contributions to the Delaware oncology community paved the way for cancer care in Delaware today. His vision and implementation of the multidisciplinary care of the cancer patient decades ago has become the standard of care today. His local reputation is only superseded by his national prominence in the oncology world. His career is a model for any young oncologist practicing today,” says Dr. Nicholas Petrelli, medical director of Christiana Care’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.

In 2002 the Frelicks joined the 1888 Society. Just as their Christiana Care annual support over the years has given them satisfaction, the provision they have made in their estate plans will continue helping Christiana Care fulfill its mission in the community.

The Frelicks have seen tremendous change and growth within their lifetimes, and they appreciate what this wonderful institution means to them today. They are truly happy to be among the supporters of Christiana Care.
